The Farver library is a branch of the LaGrange County library system that serves
Shipshewana. The library has 4,045 volumes. The historic structure was dismantled
and moved to its present location to serve as the library. This community project
took four years and was accomplished entirely with donations.
The library has a very high rate of books being checked out (one of the highest
rates of any public library in Indiana).
History of Farver Library
The Shipshewana library was in the basement of the Wolfe community building.
It was inadequate and non-visible to the community. Further more, it had little
room for books. At this time Farver School had plans to be torn down. Then the
idea came to preserve the school and create an adequate, nice, and historical
library. The restoration created a community focus on the past and future of the
town.
The Farver Building started out as a school. Abraham Farver built the school
in the 1868-1870 period. He was from Holmes Co. Ohio and had the urge to move
west. He walked 225 miles (one way) and picked out the property. Farver
then walked back and prepared his family for the move.
Employees
Salina Yoder is the only employee currently working in the library.
